How to Grow Bonsai Trees

When rooting a Silver maple, wilt?

I cut three cuttings from my three foot tall young silver maple. Basically I topped the tree. It’s for Bonsai. I wanted to root my cuttings. I dipped the base of each cutting in water then in rooting hormone. I then stuck it into a soilless mix. This mix holds water fairly well and I water on a regular basis. After three days I noticed the leaves starting to curl and sort of look sad. Is this normal? Once they set root will they push out new growth? Or do the cuttings need healthy green leaves to take root.

P.S. The leaves were fully green and healthy when I put them in the pot I planted the cuttings last Sunday evening Aug 31 and today is Thursday Sep 4.

Any advice?

Timing is everything in bonsai. There are proper times to prune, repot, fertilize, and take cuttings. Spring (with bottom heat) is the best time to take cuttings as the plant is actively growing. Summer cuttings can be taken as long as a misting system is used and the plant is kept evenly moist. You could try to place a plastic bag over the cutting to keep humidity high, but you will most likely have better success in Spring.
