When to Water a Bonsai
When must you water a Indoor Bonsai ? There’s just one honest answer and that’s “When it starts to dry out”, and depends on too many factors to account for . How big is the pot? What type of tree is it? What time of year ? Where is it placed ? What size is it? What type of soil is it in ? Bonsai care isn’t hard, but you need to pay attention
But still it’s not a difficult problem . At first , insert your finger in the pot and feel the soil to decide if it needs watering . I still do this every time with each tree. Water once the soil at a depth of 1/2″ below the surface feels dry . For most Bonsai Trees , if you’re uncertain err slightly on the dry side. But some bonsai such as Pomegranate, Serissa, Fukien Tea and Sageretia Theezans won’t tolerate drying out , so with them , if you’re not sure , err on the side of more moisture. Water bonsai differently Don’t water a plant that is obviously already wet and don’t ever let a bonsai to sit in a drip tray filled with water. You’ll kill it faster by not watering at all , but overwatering will kill a tree just as surely.
Observe YourBonsai Tree
If you’re not going to pay attention to it , maybe you shouldn’t have a bonsai at all. But if you’re willing to understand bonsai , the first place to start after doing some reading on your tree is to spend time studying it. How does the soil look when wet? What changes when it’s dry ? If you have moss on the soil or the tree , how does it change when just watered ? What about the foliage on your tree . Look at your tree carefully post watering and you’ll notice slight changes in the appearance . Once you’ve been tending your tree a while , you’ll know just by looking at it from a distance if its in distress .
Inspect your bonsai frequently . That’ how to truly know the bonsai – does that seem too much like work ? I guess it will to some people, but you’ll see what’s changing , how the shape it evolving, where new branches are beginning , or dying and you’ll see trouble before it starts to affect the health of your tree . You’ll spot the mealy bugs and aphids and notice the fine webs of spider mites and deal with them before they ever become a problem .
And best of all, you’ll have the chance to appreciate how marvelously beautiful your bonsai is. When you Water
Water from the top or from the bottom. It’s up to you . Regardless of whether you water from the top or the bottom, be certain it gets a thorough soaking so that all the roots get water . Rain water is good . Tap water is ok, but wait for twenty four hours to let the chlorine to disperse.

Jasmine Blossom Green Tea, Box of 10 foil wrap tea bags: K $3.37 The jasmine plant had its origins in Persia, or present day Iran. It was brought to China before the third century. However, it wasn’t until sometime around the fifth century that its intoxicatingly fragrant flowers were first blended with tea. Today Jasmine mainly comes from the counties surrounding Foochow in Fukien province, a district the Chinese poet Lu Yu included in his list of the outstanding tea producing areas. The delicate Jasmine flower opens only at night and is plucked in the morning, when the tiny petals are tightly closed. Between six and eight in the evening, as the temperature cools, the petals begin to open. It is reported they emit a ”popping” sound when they open, which is the signal for the scenting to begin. Flowers and tea are ”mated” in machines that control temperature and humidity. It takes four hours or so for the tea to absorb the fragrance and flavor of the Jasmine blossoms, and for the highest grades, this process may be repeated as many as seven times. Because the tea has absorbed moisture from the flowers, it must be refired to prevent spoilage. The spent flowers may or may not be removed from the final product, as the flowers are completely dry and contain no aroma. They simply add visual appeal and are no indication of the quality of the tea. Jasmine is, without a doubt, one of the world’s great teas. China produces seven quality grades of Jasmine tea. Our Jasmine Blossom blend has downy silver tips and most of the spent jasmine blossoms have been removed. It has an intoxicating aroma and a balanced and delicate flavor. This romantic tea may be enjoyed any time of the day but is especially pleasant in the evening. . |
